Like a 10-year-old boy

I would love to talk about a lot of cultural-shocks in my blog.

However, this story is about more basic level.

Although I wanted to learn cultural differences, I felt that I could not do anything at all in Vancouver.

Because, I have no common sense in other country.　

Like a 10-year-old boy.

It happened in Drug store.

This store is one of the biggest Drug store in Vancouver, which name is “London Drug”.

I was looking for Shampoo and Body soap.

I could find shampoo easily, but couldn’t find body soap.

I asked a salesperson with courage.

Peter: Where is Body soap?

Sales: Here it is.

 

There was soap in front of me, but what I wanted is different.

Peter: No, I want different one…I…I….

I don’t remember what I said, but eventually the salesperson could understand what I wanted to buy.

“Body Wash”

This is Janglish (Japanese + English) problem.

We usually call “Body Soap” which is about “Body Wash” in English.

Japanese don’t even consider if it is Janglish or not, but there might be a lot of Janglish.

Peter: Sorry to interrupt.  I had another problem using Janglish on the
         same day.  When I said, ”Could I get this one to take out?”,
         salesperson couldn’t understand.  I should have said, “To Go”,
         but Japanese people say, “Take out” in Janglish.

Janglish is so confusing me and I hope it Won't make a big trouble…hahaha

 

本ブログでは、たくさんの私が感じたカルチャーショックを綴っていきたい。

ただ、今回はそれ以前のお話。

カルチャーを知る前にまず、何も出来ない自分がいることに気づく。

なぜなら、常識が無いからである。

まるで10歳児のように。

場所はドラッグストア。

ロンドンドラッグというバンクーバー最大規模の店。

生活に必要なシャンプーやボディソープを買いに来た時のことだ。

シャンプーとコンディショナーはある程度簡単に見つけることができたが、ボディソープが見つからない。

店員に勇気を出してつたない英語で聞いてみる。

Peter: Body Soapはどこでしょうか？

店員: これです。

 

目の前に出されたものは石けんだった。

Peter: No, I want different one…I…I….

 

どのように説明したか覚えていないが、違うコーナーに連れていかれ、そこである商品が目に入る。

“Body Wash”

要するにBody SoapとはJanglish(Japanese + English)だった。

普段、何も気にせず使っている”英語”らしき言葉も、実は”ジャングリッシュ”の可能性がある。

Peter: 説明の途中申し訳ないけど、もう１つ同じ日にJanglishにやられたよ！
         ピザ屋で”Could I get this one to take out?”って言ったら、
         通じなかったんだ！何が言いたかったか、きっと日本人ならわかると
         思うんだけど。。。

実は”Take out”も確かに通じるが、一般的な言い方は”To go”という。

恐るべし、Janglish。。。
